What You Will Learn

  • Communicate effectively with informatics teams and healthcare stakeholders. 
  • Integrate EHRs into patient care. 
  • Manage data through relational databases, structured query language (SQL), data warehousing, analytical processing, cloud databases and data mining techniques.
  • Describe clinical workflows from a business perspective
  • Manage healthcare projects using the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®).
  • Develop and assess the tools used to represent medical data. 
  • Assess information technology in the healthcare environment. 
  • Comply with laws and regulations applicable to managing patient information.

Industry Certifications

Students enrolled in a USF Health master’s degree program may be able to sit for industry certifications,* including:

  • HIMSS CAHIMS and CPHIMS 
  • AHIMA Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA®) 
  • AMIA Health Informatics Certification (AHIC)
  • Project Management Institute (PMI) - Certified Associate Professional in Project Management (CAPM)® 
  • American Board of Preventative Medicine – Clinical Informatics Certification**

These certifications may carry education and work experience requirements. Typically, having a graduate degree reduces the work experience requirements.

*Students must meet all exam eligibility requirements outlined.
**The Clinical Informatics Practice Pathway expires in 2025. Beginning in 2026, the exam will be available only for those physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Clinical Informatics. This subspecialty certifying exam will be given annually throughout this period.
